Following the severe weather this week, it's an excellent time to beware of scams.
Con artists often target property owners after severe weather hits. There will be an offer to do the work immediately, but they will ask for a lot of money upfront. They disappear as soon as they get the money.
When storms cause damage, storm-chasing contractors travel to affected communities to provide services to homeowners with downed trees or roof damage. They often visit consumers door-to-door and claim to be able to perform the work right away.
Consumers should be wary of contractors who ask for a sizeable down payment or instruct them to sign over their insurance checks but perform shoddy work or do not complete the project in the first place. Following these tips can help you avoid home repair scams, according to the Ohio Attorney General:
- Do Your Research: Get the names, addresses, and phone numbers of any contractors you are considering. Check the Ohio Attorney General's Office and the Better Business Bureau for complaints. Search the internet for the business's name and words such as "complaints," "reviews" and "scams."
- Get Multiple Estimates: Consider getting at least three quotes from different contractors. Find out what your neighbors and friends recommend. Be cautious if one contractor quotes a lower price than other businesses.
- Avoid Making Large Payments: Be cautious of contractors who demand large upfront payments, such as half or more of the total cost. Pay in increments as the work is completed to your satisfaction.
- Get a Contract: Be sure to get a written contract that details the costs, the work to be done, the starting and ending dates, and any verbal promises from the contractor.
- Pay with a Card: Credit cards offer greater protection against unauthorized charges than cash payments.
