Tax Fraud Graphic

Protecting yourself against fake tax preparers is essential, as using an unscrupulous preparer can result in errors on your tax return, incorrect tax liabilities or even identity theft.

You should thoroughly research the person preparing your taxes since they can access your personal information, including your Social Security number. Tax returns are ultimately your responsibility, regardless of who prepares them.

In choosing a tax preparer, the Ohio Attorney General's Office and IRS recommend the following steps:

  • Check the Preparer's Qualifications – Search the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications. Taxpayers can use this tool to find a qualified tax return preparer.
  • Ask About Fees – Preparers who base their fees on a percentage of the refund should be avoided. Until you have retained a preparer, please don't give anyone any tax documents or other information.
  • Request Submission with e-File – Direct deposit and electronic filing are the fastest ways to receive your refund.
  • Never Sign a Blank Return – When working with a tax preparer, you should never sign a blank tax form.
  • Review Your Return Carefully – Review your tax return before signing it. If something is unclear, ask questions. Your return should be accurate before you sign it. Ensure your refund goes directly to you - not to the preparer's bank account. You should receive a copy of the completed tax return from the preparer.
  • Ensure the Preparer Signs – All paid tax preparers are required to have a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). Paid preparers must sign returns and include their PTINs by law.
