Cyber Monday is a day that delights savvy holiday shoppers. Sadly, it is also an excellent day for tech-savvy criminals. Take advantage of the holiday rush with a little more security with these tips from cybersecurity and data protection company Norton:

  • Shop only with reputable retailers - Go directly to local and national retailers’ sites to avoid shady third-party sellers, and skip offers in ads, emails, or texts
  • Use only secure websites - When shopping online, look for secured sites with the lock icon and URLs that begin with HTTPS
  • Strong passwords are great defense - Protect your financial information with solid and unique passwords for each site that combines upper- and lower-case letters, numbers and symbols
  • Pay with credit cards, not debit cards - Credit cards are a safer way to shop online than debit cards since they keep your bank account safe from direct access and don’t store your credit card on retailers’ sites to speed up checkout
  • Avoid shopping on public Wi-Fi - Public connections are often unencrypted and unsecured, meaning scammers can steal your name, address, credit card number, and other personal information. You should use a virtual private network to transmit data securely if you must use public networks
  • Report fraud immediately - Contact your bank or card issuer immediately if you find an incorrect or suspicious transaction
